ABSTRACT

Several locally severe floods occurred in Mississippi in the period September 1965-September 1967. On September 10, 1965, a tidal wave caused by Hurricane Betsy was responsible for much damage along the western half of the Mississippi gulf coast.

Extreme floods occurred February 10, 1966, on streams draining between 10 and 200 square miles in a relatively narrow area of heavy rainfall between Vicksburg and New Albany. General but less severe flooding occurred in the central and southern parts of the State between Vicksburg and New Albany. General but less severe flooding occurred in the central and southern parts of the State between February 9 and February 17.

During the last half of April 1966 two storm periods caused heavy rain in central Mississippi. The second storm also caused unusual floods in the southwestern part of the State. Cental Mississippi received heavy rain again on May 19, 1966, but the only outstanding floods recorded for this rain were in the city of Jackson.

The floods of April 13-15, 1967, in southwestern Mississippi were unusual but not as high as the floods of October 4, 1964. On June 1, 1967, a cloudburst rain caused 50-year or greater floods on small drainage areas in southwestern Jackson. Another heavy small area rain caused 50-year or greater floods on small streams near Hickory Flat on July 9, 1967. Rainfall as great as 13 inches in 24 hours along the Mississippi gulf coast on September 6, 1967, caused no record floods, but did cause an estimated 10-year flood at one site.
