ABSTRACT

The importance of the river basin as a logical geographic unit for estimating streamflow characteristics has produced a need for a compilation of basin characteristics of Mississippi streams. This compilation includes drainage area, river mile, valley length, and stream-bottom elevation at selected sites. The purpose and scope of this report is to provide a tabulation, in downstream order, of these basin characteristics for use in hydrologic studies such as low-flow and flood-frequency analyses and rainfall-runoff correlations.

The compilation is divided into nine parts, each part constituting a major drainage basin. The drainage basins were then listed in downstream order according to the national system of stream numbering. The parts are as follows:

1. Tombigbee River basin
2. Pascagoula River basin
3. Coastal river basins (Tchoutacabouffa, Biloxi, Wolf, and Jourdan Rivers)
4. Pearl River basin
5. Tennessee River drainage and Tuscumbia-Hatchie-Wolf River basins
6. Yazoo River basin
7. Big Black River basin
8. Bayou Pierre basin
9. Homochitto-Buffalo-Amite River basins
The parts will be released separately as each is completed. Upon completion of all parts, they will be combined and published as one report. The major drainage basins are shown in figure 1.
